White Dog is the exception, unless of course there is a nice sauce or at least LOTS of butter. The rest of the White Dog Army are vegetable lovers and cabbage is one of their all-time favorites.

There is a ritual involved when I make coleslaw...which was on the menu tonight with fish tacos.

First, all of the Army must have a section of whole cabbage leaf to thoughtfully munch as I cut the head into wedges and grate it into the bowl. THEN all must have a few shredded bits.

Carrots must be cut into halves and distributed so their freshness can be evaluated; only after am I allowed to grate those into the bowl. All watch to make sure the proportions are right; 1/3 carrots to 2/3 cabbage.

Steve then takes the bowl into the kitchen and before I mix in the dressing, two spoons of the veggies go into the bottom of each dinner bowl. Except White Dog's. A bit of broth is poured over and kibble is added. Their homecooked fish and veggies are layered on top. Do NOT mix.

Pearl and Opal particularly like to plunge their snooters into their bowls and root through to stir the meal. It is a bit messy but their cleanup is complete. Tizenegy just takes deeper gulps from his bowl so that he enjoys a bit of each layer with each bite. Zsofia delicately strips away each layer then enjoys the cabbage with broth as a soup-like end to her meal. Roman and Bailey go to town with the task of not missing a crumb of anything and Bella chases back and forth between what is in her skittering bowl and what she is leaving behind.

They ALL think Steve and I silly for our forkfuls between bites of taco...AND for those points when we actually STOP eating to have conversation.

I am delighted that the WDA so loves their vegetables and am doubly glad that the nutrient rich side dish causes no digestive issues among the pack...the post dinner naps in close quarters might be VERY different otherwise.
