White Dog quietly moved deeper on her mattress into the closet as Roman came into the office. The others were all fast asleep.

"Hi Bud," I said. With the pollen count I was having a not good breathing day and was kind of subdued. He walked over to me with his drop gait; he was feeling some discomfort, too.

I tenderly cupped his muzzle and let my fingers massage the furs inside of it. "We are a pair, eh?" Roman twisted his head so that he could press the side of his face into my palm and lick my hand.

"Thanks for the kisses."

He moved closer to put his chin on my leg and stared directly into my eyes. This is unusual for My Boy and I was not sure whether to meet his gaze but he bumped me and tried again. "I wasn't sure that you wanted me to gaze back. I don't want to be threatening to you," I explained. I returned his look, deeply, as he was looking at me.

It was two souls speaking and Roman was offering me empathy and understanding...an intense kind of comfort. I held his face and absorbed his message of love. I hoped he understood that I knew his pain and that I shared his burden; our bond was mutual.

"You have a beautiful heart," I told him. "I believe in you and love you completely. Together, Baby Boy, together we can get through all of this."

Roman shifted again to lick my hand and rested his head once again in its cup. He closed his eyes and I was filled with a rush of his trust...and then, as if he had taxed himself to his limit, he turned and hobbled out of the room.
I turned to White Dog, "Progress and change or reconnecting with what lies buried in his soul?"
